Skin tone

If you want a natural-looking finish, you’ll need to consider your skin tone. As a general rule, cool skin tones suit cool colours (such as blue and purple), whereas warm skin tones suit warm shades (such as red and orange). These colours should form the base of any tint you add to your hair.

Highlights

The secret to natural-looking hair colour is to make any changes subtly. If you’re after a shade that simply enhances what you already have, or returns your hair to its natural tone, it’s often best to stay within three shades of your natural hair colour. Highlights should look sun-kissed and add shine.

Lowlights

Make solid, dark shades more interesting with lowlights. These thin stripes of subtle bright shades look like filtered light and are often viewed as highlights for brunettes, but can be placed through red hair, too. Lowlights should add depth, texture, movement and shine. If your hair is dark, and you want a bright flash of a colour that contrasts with your original shade, you’ll need to have your hair section bleached first. When the base colour is light enough, your new, bold shade will be much more vibrant and potentially last longer.

Bold shades

Colouring your hair is a great way to express your individuality. If your hair’s dark but you fancy a playful bright pink, you’ll need to lighten your hair first with a full-head bleach. You can also bleach smaller sections of hair and colour to suit your mood.

Hair shine

Some colour treatments thicken the hair strand. With this in mind, if you’re after a shade that maintains your hair health, then an all-over semi-permanent is less damaging than permanent colours.
